History

At Meridian we believe that history should inspire children's curiosity and knowledge about the past.  Our history curriculum supports children learning new and exciting facts and knowledge as well as developing their historical skills.  We know that the children love learning about people and places so they have the opportunity to learn about a wide range of people through our history topics, as well as through our Important People mini studies. Our history topics directly link to our two year cycle with themes that are revisited throughout the children's time in school.

History is taught in a variety of ways, including using artefacts, key texts, historical sources and images, visitors and visiting local places of historical importance.  Each historical topic has an overarching question that teachers use to take children on a journey towards being able to answer this question in an age appropriate way.  We try and immerse the children in their history topic through making links with other subjects to bring the learning alive.

We aim to ensure that all children are able to speak confidently about their historical knowledge and develop the vocabulary to communicate this effectively, as well as a love of history!

Children learn about about a wide range of historical periods and people, from dinosaurs, the Battle of Hastings and Lewes Castle, to the Ancient Egyptians, Romans and the Windrush Generation - and plenty more in between!

As well as our theme based topics, all year groups have an important person to learn about through our Important Person mini-study which are displayed around the school every year.  From learning about themselves in the Nursery to Mahatma Gandhi in Year 3 and Emmeline Pankhurst in Year 6, children have the opportunity to develop their understanding of the past through these people's fascinating stories and their impact and legacy.
