Geography

Our geography curriculum is based on inspiring children's curiosity about the world so that they can develop their local, national and global knowledge and understanding.  We want all children to learn about a wide range of places and people and recognise the similarities and differences to their own lives and experiences.

Children are taught geography through our curriculum themes of The Natural World and Environmental Issues and Citizenship.  Within these themes, children build on prior knowledge through interesting and engaging topics, such as Looking after animals and plants in Early Years to protecting the earth from climate change and global warming through a study of Polar regions in Years 5 and 6.  There are also opportunities through other topics to practise and develop their geographical knowledge and understanding.

All our geography topics are supported through a trip to enhance their geographical knowledge and develop their geographical skills, such as map reading and field work.  Children will have the opportunity to visit local beaches, a local river and a forest during their time at Meridian.  They also enjoy learning about the seasons and the weather during their Forest School lessons!

As well as our theme based topics, all year groups have a country to learn about through our Global mini-study which are displayed around the school every year.  From China to Italy and United Kingdom to Kenya, children have the opportunity to develop their understanding of the world, the physical and human geography, interesting facts and figures and fascinating stories, both factual and fictional.
