Art & Design

At Meridian, children have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in art and design from Nursery to Year 6.  We aim to engage, inspire and challenge all children to allow them to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.  Children have the opportunity to begin to think critically and develop an understanding of art and design through the carefully mapped out art curriculum, which includes learning about key artists and visiting London's National Gallery.  Our curriculum supports children to become confident and proficient in drawing, painting, printing and 3D form.

Nursery and Reception access access art and design in their learning environment through high quality continuous provision as well as direct teaching for key outcomes in painting, printing, 3D art and drawing.

For Key Stage One and Key Stage Two, art is taught across the year in blocked units that, wherever possible, are linked to one of the topics or mini-studies taught.  All year groups complete four different units every year (drawing, painting, printing and 3D form) which have been carefully mapped out to build on prior learning and skills development.

Children also have the chance to practise their art knowledge and skills throughout the year to respond to different themes, texts and experiences.

Sketchbooks are started in Year One and travel through the school with the child to demonstrate their ideas development, skills exploration and self-evaluation of their work - and are a wonderful record of their artistic achievements.
