Music

In our music lessons, we inspire children to create and appreciate a wide variety of different music, including learning to play different instruments, including the recorders, ukulele and African djembe drumming.  We are lucky to have a dedicated music teacher who teaches all classes, from Nursery to Year 6 for music every week and who is passionate about raising the profile of music within the school and local community.  In these weekly lessons, children develop their skills in playing, singing, improvising, creating and listening to music. 

Music knowledge and skills are developed through a carefully planned curriculum where the children learn and perform different musical genres, such as rock, disco, soul, ballads and Motown!  

Every week children from Reception to Year 6 listen to, discuss and explore a specific classical music piece, which is also shared in a weekly music newsletter with all parents/carers to support this learning at home if they wish.

Our music teacher also leads weekly singing assemblies for children from Year 1 to Year 6 where they enjoy learning new songs and singing their favourites together - he has even written our very own Meridian School song!  Did you know that singing is such a great way to support mental health and it is lovely to hear the children singing together every week.

In the summer term, all children have the opportunity to perform their music to both their peers and their families in an end of year concert.

For children who want to develop their music further and outside of the existing curriculum, the school supports instrument tuition and an after-school choir club.  Our choir has the opportunity to perform to members of the local community and had the chance to join other schools in a Christmas concert at Glyndebourne.
